2002-09-04 02:06 UTC "I'm in the train! ... Sorry? ... No! The train!"
I don't have a mobile phone and there's a good reason... they make you stupid. And they might cause cancer (well they emit microwave radiation and you hold them to your head while they are on the high setting and leave them next to your genitals the rest of the time — you do the maths).
Having said that, I, like many others, have found my own way of sharing every experience, however mundane, to validate [my] actions
. It's called a Web log.
So here are some mundane events that happened to me today:
- I cooked some pasta. That reminds me. I have got to buy my mum a new colander. And I need more cheese. I guess I'll go shopping tomorrow. (No, the shops here aren't open at 2am. Nothing is.)
- I sent some posts to www-style: disillusioning someone about Mozilla's abilities, explaining to someone that UAs don't work by magic, explaining what the CSS working group intends to do with lists (well, actually, explaining what I intend to do, since I'm the editor of that module), giving use cases for empty generated content, and defending those use cases.
- I did part one of my laundry. The washing machine here looks like some sort of multi-function device with abilities ranging from drying to space flight. And there were way too many bottles and tablets of different washing products around it. I took a random guess at the best settings for socks and stuck two tablets pretty much at random into the tray thing. Hopefully all will be ok.
- I watched repeats of The Simpsons and Spin City, two of the few shows which I really like (StarGate SG-1 is another). I've noticed that I can no longer watch TV without a TiVo. With my TiVo, there's always something good, or at least not too bad, to watch. If I watch live TV without a TiVo, I get these subconcious urges to hit pause, or skip back, or thumbs down, and subconsiously get frustrated as I look around for the TiVo remote before realising that, in fact, there isn't one to find. It's quite worrying, really.
- I watched Tantek on French national TV news (over the web). His name was "Touriste Americain". Most amusing.
- I earned a couple of dollars for referring someone to DreamHost. Yay. I hope he appreciates them (DreamHost, not the dollars!) as much as I do.
- I posted my 100th Web log entry.
Now, having said that I don't want a phone, what I do need is a way of getting mobile internet access on my laptop, without the bad influence of a voice-enabled device. Can you get GPRS without a phone? How about Ricochet in the UK? Could I convince the rest of Melksham to set up 802.11b repeaters?
No, I didn't think so. Sigh.
