There's something very screwed up about my Mandrake installation.
I installed tcpdump. A very interesting tool. It revealed to me that my laptop can definitely see the packets being broadcast on the local network by the Windows2000 gateway. (Those packets all seem to have random MAC addresses, but who am I to argue. The laptop receives those packets whenever the Win2K box's "sent packets" count goes up, which is good enough for me.)
Unfortunately, it also revealed that while packets are being sent from the laptop, the Windows2000 machine is totally ignoring them.
I don't understand why. It works fine when I boot my laptop's Windows hard disk (a removable hard disk which I hadn't booted for 8 months until yesterday, to run the RGSetup program and check my wireless router's settings -- they were what I expected them to be).
I am at a loss as to what to do. I don't know where the problem is.
